One usually thinks of the western saddle as an American style of riding, but in fact it's origins can be traced back to the Moorish horsemen and warriors of the Dark Ages. When the Moors invaded Spain in 700, brought with them their unique style of riding and tack. Their saddles were designed for battle with longer stirrups to accommodate their armor and cantle than those provided in the saddle of security and protection against their enemies. So it was mainly Knights and Crusaders who used these saddles.

The Spanish Moors saddle adapted for use in what became known as the Spanish War Saddle. This was the saddle that they brought to the New World. How they changed the need for military equipment to fight an insurgency with the needs of colonial expansion, the military saddle was again transformed into a saddle of actions to better suit your needs. This was known as the Spanish Stock Saddle. It was designed as a tool for the job of the cowboy and evolved along with the expansion into the American West, for all Indians to help fight the settlers round their cattle.

Over time the stock saddle was influenced by geography and culture of using it. Very distinct styles developed reflecting differences in climate, terrain, culture and photography work styles. The harsh climate and punish the mesquite brush of south resulted in saddles built to protect the pilot, making it big, bulky, heavy and smooth. California, on the other hand, had a mild climate with lush land where the vaqueros had leisure time more. Their saddles were not only smaller than the Texans, but evolved into pieces of highly decorative still used in the show ring today, with its elaborate designes conchos and tooling.

From 1700 through the 1950s, the western saddle continued to grow and evolve, with many new features to support cattle work and improved construction methods extending the strength, durability and comfort of the piece.

Today, the cowboy's work is not only focus on making the saddle. They are designed for a wide variety of uses such as pilots and flight or pleasure, endurance, rodeo contestant, team roper, barrel racer, Reiner, cutter, and of course the work of the cowboy. Western saddles are now in the world, but regardless of style or origin, all these saddles have a pedigree that parts of the western saddle photography.
