There are many coin price guides published weekly, biweekly, monthly and yearly. They come in the form of magazines, newsprint, "hot sheets", and books. We are all talking to one of these from time to time to check what a particular coin may be worth. However, few of us stop to think about what we are getting from any one of these price guides, and the price or value of a currency. After all, no mortgage price, just give you the price? What else is there?
Basic to the understanding of mortgage pricing are two things: 1) the degree of currency and 2) the Foundation of the guide price. Knowing the degree of currency is necessary before one can get. Saying so seems to be obvious, but what does that mean?
Unless the coin is graded by a professional appropriate classification of the company, which designated the Grid and identity has been attributed to money, most of us are making an assumption about the true extent. This assumption that we can be very dangerous, because: a) the difficulty in classification of a coin, and b) the different possible outcomes or results occurring. Grade A "point" or level can make a difference in hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of a currency.
Price Guides assume that you already know the level of the currency. That is why we have the First Rule of Coin Collecting: Know the extent of its currency.
Secondly, ALL Price Guides are based on the same principle, which is the currency, the price you are looking up, were classified according to a standard classification. This classification standard is defined by the ANA - American Numismatic Association - and is entitled the Official Grading Standards For U.S. Coins.
Therefore, all price guides have a guess "silent" built on its tab, which is the class that you decide is true or accurate, and how much is based on the ANA standards.
The first difficulty that arises is that most people never know the degree that they have decided is accurate. Of course, this difficulty does not come into question if the coin is professionally graded by an appropriate company. There are only four (4) A reputable grading companies that strictly follow the guidelines established by the ANA, and they are: PCGS, NCG, ICG, and ANACS.
The second problem stems from the fact that this hypothesis "silent" or foundation of all price guides is whether or not the class has been decided on the basis of guidelines or standards established by the ANA. If you do not have the skills and training of a professional student of the coin, the decision is probably questionable.
Even if you have the skills and training of a professional student of the coin, the decision is probably questionable. Why? Because even professional coin graders have differing opinions. This is why reputable companies grading coins require the opinions of three (3) Professional Coin students to get to the "Grade designation" to be placed in each currency.
The obvious conclusion is that a serious Coin Collector to invest in rare coins and modern, that are graded by one of four reputable classification societies. It is the only way to eliminate the differences and arguments about the Grade of Any coin being bought or sold! It is the only sure way you can value your coin collection. It also eliminates "getting taken" or cheated buying raw coins materials.
Have fun collecting your Perfect Coins!
